Dress Codes Defined

G-Alexander-Midnight-Blue-Tuxedo

You’ve just been invited to a wedding, party, or business event. Here’s a handy guide to help you decide what to wear when the dress code is…

WHITE TIE – The most formal dress code, typically reserved for events such as state dinners or a debutante ball

• Women: Wear a formal, floor-length evening gown. Go all out with your most dramatic shoes and jewelry.

• Men: Wear a tuxedo, a long black jacket with tails, a white wing-collared shirt, a white vest, a white bow tie, and black patent-leather shoes. White or gray gloves are appropriate.

BLACK TIE – Less dressy than white tie, but still pretty formal, and usually reserved for evening affairs

• Women: Wear a floor-length evening gown, a knee-length dress with heels, or your dressiest black dress. Dressy separates, like a knee-length skirt and shell set, also work.

• Men: Wear a tuxedo, a black bow tie, a black cummerbund or vest, and black patent-leather shoes. In the summer or on a cruise, a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo pants would be appropriate, along with the rest of the black-tie wardrobe.

CREATIVE BLACK TIE – Formal, but with a trendy twist

• Women: Skip the modest gown in favor of a more fun, but still formal dress. You can also wear a formal knee-length dress, a satin ball-gown skirt with a cashmere sweater or blouse, or tuxedo pants with a silk top. Accessories should be fun and unique.

• Men: Wear a tuxedo combined with trendy or whimsical items, such as a black shirt or a colored or patterned bow tie with a matching cummerbund.

FORMAL – Slightly less formal than black tie

• Women: Wear a floor-length gown, a knee-length cocktail dress or little black dress with heels, or a dressy suit.

• Men: Wear a dark suit and tie with dressy leather shoes, or a tuxedo.

SEMI-FORMAL – Somewhere between formal and casual, depending on the time of the event

• Women: Wear a knee-length cocktail dress, a little black dress, a dressy skirt and top, or even slacks with a dressy blouse.

• Men: Wear a suit and tie in a dark or light color, depending on the season and the time of day, or dress pants with a collared shirt and jacket. Add dressy leather shoes.

COCKTAIL ATTIRE – Festive and fun, but not formal

• Women: Wear a knee-length dress, or even dress pants or a skirt with a nice blouse.

• Men: Wear a jacket and slacks, with or without a tie. Colors or patterns can be a bit bolder than with semi-formal attire.

BUSINESS CASUAL – Casual, but work-appropriate

• Women: Wear dress pants, a casual dress, or a skirt with a nice blouse. Stay away from spaghetti straps or plunging necklines.

• Men: Wear khakis or dress pants with a collared shirt and loafers (or loafer-style shoes). You can also add a sport coat or blazer.

CASUAL – Anything goes, but stay away from jeans, shorts, and tank tops for bigger events (casual weddings included).

• Women: Wear a sundress, a skirt or pants with a pretty top.

• Men: Wear khakis with a button-down, a sweater, or a polo shirt.

Vera Wang Tux in Rochester, NY

The Vera Wang Tux label has been exclusively licensed to Men’s Wearhouse for the past several years, so independent menswear shops like Vittorio’s are not able to carry this specific line.

That said, if you are interested in this type of tuxedo you might consider alternatives by Ike Behar, Michael Kors, Allure Men or others in our Ultra Collection of rentals. These tuxedos have a slimmer fit profile, are constructed with Super 100’s fabrics and offer a variety of features that we would consider competitive with the Vera Wang Tux line.

At the very least, you should compare your options and see what line provides the best fit (pardon the pun) with your vision for your wedding day.

How Wide is Your Tie?

Tie_Width

Tie widths have varied through the years. Super-wide Kipper Ties with wild patterns were a hallmark of the 1970’s while Buddy Holly sported thin models in the 1950’s. The Bolo or western tie is not much more than a braided bit of string or leather with fancy tips and a clasp.

Where we are in 2015, is in the midst of a narrowing tie trend. Wider looks from the early 2000’s are giving way to a narrower profile. Most standard width models arriving from our designers are 3″ in width with slim models clocking in at around 2″.  Take a look at the ties in your closet. If they’re wider than 3″ you might consider an update and re-boot to something a little more slender.

Stop by our store and we’ll show you a variety of contemporary or traditional options to match your wardrobe. Whether you need one tie or several for a wedding party or other group, we’d be delighted to help if we can.

Bow Tie or Long Tie

Clearly, life is filled with choices. While your choice of tie style may not make or break your day, it is a question that comes up from time to time.

Fashion, almost by it’s definition, evolves and wide ties and skinny long ties have both had their day in the sun. If you were to go back seven or eight years, it would have been difficult to give away a bow tie.  Around 2010, we started to see a big resurgence in requests for bow ties. Perhaps it was due to some well placed celebrities wearing them at awards shows or maybe someone’s cousin Frank from New York or Chicago wore one at his family’s holiday party swearing that it’s what all his friends were wearing. However it happened, a lot of guys wear them now in less formal situations – with a sport coat or even with denim on #bowtiewednesday.

You can get fairly simple pre-tied versions or go the extra mile with the kind you tie yourself. Solids, patterns, stripes are all available in bow tie versions. Haven’t taken the time to learn how? We can help with that on our handy How to Tie A Bow Tie page. You’ll find a chart, downloadable PDF and video that shows you everything you need to get started. Our advice – it’s easy enough to learn, but don’t wait until ten minutes before you have to be somewhere to start to figure it out.

If you’re in the area, stop by our store and we’ll show you some great options to wear in different settings. If you’re planning a wedding or group event we can order matching ties (and pocket squares if you’d like) for your wedding party. Any way you slice it, we make it easy to start rocking a bow tie for your next event.
